North Street Book Prize Review:
Creative nonfiction about a true crime epidemic in Big Horn County, Montana, the childhood home of the author. Big Horn is infamous for having the highest rates of murdered and missing Native American women and children in the country. This book recounts the stories of several victims, framed within a more detailed account of the disappearance of sixteen-year-old Selena Bell Not Afraid. The author, Bonnie Bley, condemns not only the criminals but the negligence of law enforcement in their lack of response and in their too-often refusal to identify these tragedies as crimes at all. Strength: Social message Thank you for submitting this book. It is valuable as a public service and call for change. Our head judge, Jendi Reiter, commended the project as a whole: An important topic (missing and murdered Indigenous women) presented in an engaging, emotional way through dramatic reconstructions […] The social mission of the book is powerful, and though episodic and often difficult due to the subject matter, I commend the focus and the deep feeling the author brings to the work. |

5.0 out of 5 stars Read This Book Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024 Verified Purchase Stolen Voices will sneak up on you after you finish the last page. It has won several awards, deservedly so. The research is solid but didn't hit me over the head with minutiae which is a common stumble for debut authors. This is a story of indigenous girls and women who are abducted, often murdered, and the crusade to bring them home and find justice. Settle in with this book, it is written in a style unique to people of Montana and Wyoming where stories seem to start as a simple tale and end as haunting as a ghost story. Personally I think this book should be handed out at every dude ranch in "cowboy" country to bear witness to a people who were living in harmony long ago and the women who continue to be silenced victims. Cheryl Horn 5.0 out of 5 stars be their voice Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024Thank you for bringing the stories of those without a voice. This is also a form of healing for the family! Tucker 5.0 out of 5 stars Very insightful Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024Having grown up in this area I never knew the extent of how many missing women there were!!! Lora 5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024This book hits close to home for me, and Bonnie brought so much awareness to the missing and murdered young people in Big Horn County. She shares stories and sheds the light on the corruption and those who turn a blind eye. I know there is a lack of investigation on these cases and many more who have gone missing. A MUST READ. Laura 5.0 out of 5 stars Their voices should be heard Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2024 Verified Purchase Ms. Bley’s book told an incredibly important story combining facts, statistics and moving testimony. She brought the hard truth to life of shamefully under told and under reported circumstances that should be front page headlines. Hopefully, through this must read book, more actions will be taken to investigate these cases and to protect people. Julie 5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read! Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2024 Verified Purchase How many times have you heard about tragedies and said to yourself, “Why doesn’t somebody do something about that?” or “What can I do to help?” Bonnie Bley has taken action to bring awareness to the epidemic level of missing and murdered people in Big Horn County. She shares the stories of what happened and shines a light on corruption. Bonnie speaks for those who cannot any longer. A very touching, poignant “must read.” Dawn H. 5.0 out of 5 stars Good read!!! Very powerful! Great work on identifying a huge problem that needs to be resolved. Well written. It’s people like Bonnie, who writes stories like this to make their voices heard. It saddens me to know how many cases are dismissed without proper investigation. Highly recommend reading this book! LisaF 5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling read Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2024 Verified Purchase A well thought out and compelling read regarding missing/murdered Native Americans. A true tragedy of society that overlooks a segment of the population at risk. The individual stories will touch the heart but awareness needs to be brought to the larger public arena- and this book does so! Read it. Jennifer 5.0 out of 5 stars Help shine the spotlight! Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2024 Author Bonnie Bley showcases the tragic silencing of too many voices on and around Indian Reservations especially in Montana. Once started, her book is difficult to put down! We should all be aware of this silent epidemic. . Christina 5.0 out of 5 stars She did an awesome job with getting our lost peoples' voices out there. Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2024 I loved the whole book. Even though it's a horrible, true subject that hits close to home. Bonnie did an awesome job. |
